Seven accused members of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
